Lieutenant Colonel GR Saltonstall OBE

Lieutenant Colonel Saltonstall:

Born 3 March 1921, Died on 3 January 1996 aged 74.

He joined Regiment in August 1940 and spent 241 days in the Ranks.
He was commissioned on 12 April 1941.

Saw war time service with 2/4 KOYLI

He was Adjutant of 1 KOYLI for a short period in 1950 before attending Staff College.

Brigade Major 151 Infantry Brigade (TA) form 1952 – 54

He rejoined 1 KOYLI in 1954 in Berlin as a Company Commander and saw service with the Battalion in Kenya during the anti Mau Mau operations, then in Aden and finally in Cyprus during the EOKA campaign.

In November 1963 he assumed command of 1 KOYLI, then stationed in Malaya as part of 28 Commonwealth Brigade.

He commanded the Battalion on operations in Borneo and on the Malayan Peninsula itself.

In 1964 the battalion under his command were  posted to Tidworth, Wiltshire, where in 1965 they were sent to Aden on  a very successful 9 month operational tour,  returning to Tidworth  in early 1966.

He relinquished command of the Battalion in UK in August 1966 and was awarded the OBE.

He then served in MOD and later was appointed Chief Instructor at the Junior Division Staff College at Warminster.

He retired from the Army in 1973.
