Herbert (Bert) Chadwick
Born 23rd December 1919 and died on 17th May 2002
I have noticed in this months "Silver Bugle" the death of Herbert (Bert)
Chadwick MBE MM ex QM. KOYLI.
He was born 23rd December 1919 and died on 17th May 2002, after a long
illness. He was the R.S.M in 1959 when I joined the regiment in Hilden, and was
very Keen on the traditional Bugle calls in the regiment, he once used the
Buglers to play the call to "Embus from a train" whilst on an exercise in BAOR-
( I think we played "Fall-out")
He was a bluddy terror when he became Q.M in 1961, you could not simply go to
the Q.M Stores and present a pair of boots that needed changing, he made us
stand in line, he inspected us, gave us a bawling out for mis-using the articles
we had to change.
But he was in another way kind-----if you stood up to him, he respected that.
I can say that he was one of a few I knew who used to "help" in the erection of
Tents, and other stores, he was not AFRAID to get his hands dirty, these were
the OLD soldiers from the 2nd World War, who had been to Hell and back and knew
how to deal with officers and men.
Great bloke, a regimental character.
He died after a long Illness.
He married a German girl in 1948 called Hella, he had children.
He was the Chairman of the Wakefield branch of the KOYLI until was unable to do
so.
Sorry to hear he has gone.
