GRAHAM JONES: BEM
Graham enlisted into KSLI and was part of the clerical support
until he left for
pastures new.
He joined 3 LI clerical team in Plymouth from the Recce Platoon.
It was immediately apparent that his previous clerical knowledge
had not deserted him and he fitted into the Orderly Room very
quickly. I found him likeable, intelligent and very quick to grasp
new procedures. Graham always expressed an opinion and in most
cases was right: he called a 'spade a spade'. He got on with
everyone, and voluntarily worked long hours for the benefit of the
battalion.
Whilst in Belfast in 1972, he was promoted Sergeant on Christmas
day.
He later became ORC of 2 LI under HarryFinley.
Harry could not have wished for a more dedicated and efficient
member of staff.
From there he was appointed to be Chief Clerk 3 LI. His CO at the
time was Lieutenant Colonel John Hemsley. It was at this time that
Graham worked day and night to get procedures to fit in with his
way of working for his efforts he was awarded the British Empire
Medal.
Thereafter Graham was appointed to be Chief Clerk of 5LI where he
again proved to be a big hit with military and civilian members of
the unit.
Next he moved to Winchester as a WOI. He completed his regular
service there.
He volunteered for an appointment on the Long Service List and was
posted to
Salisbury.
Soon afterwards, there became an appointment vacant with 5 LI:
this was an NRPS post as Chief Clerk. He was selected for this
post and stayed there until he was forced to retire on the
reorganisation of the TA.
Graham was a happily married man with wife Anita and two sons. He
chose
Shrewsbury as his home, a town where he had an abundance of
friends.
Wherever he has been, Graham has been popular with all ranks. He
was extremely loyal and worked for the good of the soldiers. He
earned his respect: in turn he offered respect to others.
Graham will be sadly missed by a great many people and we all
offer our
condolences to his family.
